Western Engineering Summer Academy

About WESA  

The Western Engineering Summer Academy is designed to offer ambitious grade 9-12 students who excel in math and science, the opportunity to explore different types of engineering, learn about university life, and add to their extracurriculars for further enrichment. These courses provide students the opportunity to work in Western’s top research facilities and teaching environments. The courses are taught by Western Engineering professors and graduate students.

Western Engineering Outreach will be offering three week-long Western Engineering Summer Academy courses for the summer of 2023! We will be hosting one course from July 31st to August 4th, and August 14th to 18th. The themes this year are Civil Engineering, Artificial Intelligence Systems Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

All courses will be held at Western University's Faculty of Engineering and will cost $300 per week. Pick-up and drop-off locations, and registration rooms will be provided once registered for your course of choice.

Western Engineering Summer Academy Courses

July 31 – Aug 4

Civil Engineering in the Modern Era – structures, transportation, wind, water and smart cities 

In the Civil Engineering course, you will hear from engaging speakers and participate in various hands-on activities and workshops learning about structures, transportation, wind, water and smart cities. During this course, you will visit the world-renowned Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel and WindEEE and work with researchers and students.

Aug 14 – 18

AI in Action Heroes: Artificial Intelligence Systems Engineering

In the Artificial Intelligence Engineering Course, you’ll learn how to use python to program a robotic car with selected AI capabilities. Throughout the week, you will attend lessons and hands-on workshops teaching you the fundamentals of programming, AI, and how to program your robotic smart car. We will prepare the robotic car for you and provide a computer with wifi capabilities to connect with the car.

Mech Warriors – Mechanical Engineering

In the Mechanical Engineering course, you will learn about automation and robotics, Arduino programming and 3D printing and will design an assisted device.  Learn through a mixture of classroom and hands-on lab settings as you are immersed in typical activities performed by Mechanical Engineers. We will be providing you with a computer to use for lessons and workshops throughout the entire week.
